Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is one of many medications linked to the extreme allergic reaction SJS (Stevens Johnson Syndrome), which can turn fatal if not treated quickly.
This medication is a part of the fluroquinolone antibiotic drug family, and is one of the most prescribed drugs in the United States.
Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a major health concern for patients and prescribing physicians, as there is no diagnostic method available to determine if a patient may be vulnerable to SJS.
In addition, scientists are unsure why only certain patients develop an SJS reaction or why only certain medications seem to initiate it.
About Cipro
Cipro is one of many popular medications linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, with others including Zithromax and Lamictal.
Cipro is popularly prescribed to treat urinary tract infections, as well as gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Approved by the FDA in 1987, brand name Cipro is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare and earns the company millions every year.
Cipro is effective against many different bacterial infections and can be prescribed to both adults and children, but has been reportedly causing Stevens Johnson Syndrome in patients.
Overview of Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an extremely rare occurrence, with less than 300 cases diagnosed per year. This condition is infamously characterized by the red or purple skin lesions that appear on the body, typically covering up to 30% of surface area.
Its more severe cousin TEN (Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis) comes with the same symptoms, but is more aggressive and can cover up to 90% of the body in skin lesions. These skin lesions cause areas of the skin to peel off, exposing new skin, internal muscle and tissue to potential infection.
Oftentimes patients suffering from Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome and other medication-induced SJS cases have to be treated in hospital burn units. There is no way to replenish lost skin, but a clean, sterile environment is needed while skin heals.
Like other antibiotic-caused SJS cases, Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome begins with flu like symptoms and typically occurs within the first few weeks of starting the medication. This condition can progress rapidly, turning fatal if not diagnosed in time.
In addition to peeling skin, SJS attacks the mucous membranes. In these cases, the eyes, nose, and throat can swell up, making it difficult for the patient to breathe and swallow.
Even if patients are lucky enough to survive this condition, they may have to contend with some degree of blindness or skin damage for the rest of their lives. Due to the severity of Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome, as well as other SJS cases, it is vital that this condition is mentioned on the drugs’ warning label.
Patients who suffered Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome may be able to file legal action against the manufacturing company for failing to warn them of the SJS risks. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer, to determine if they are eligible for a Cipro Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuit.
