Lamictal SJSGlaxoSmithKline is facing Lamictal Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits from across the country, from patients who allegedly suffered the adverse skin reaction from their anti-epileptic drug.

Allegations in a Lamictal Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuit typically claim that the manufacturer of the anti-epileptic drug failed to warn consumers about the potential risk of life-threatening complications associated with the drug’s use.

Lamictal SJS Cases

Ever since its release in 2004, patients have been reporting cases of Lamictal SJS from across America and other countries. One example comes from a graduate student from Georgia who suffered the infamous Lamictal rash.

Khaliah S. was prescribed generic lamotrigine and brand name Lamictal in December 2013, and began developing SJS symptoms in a month. The Lamictal rash had repeatedly caused her skin to peel off, which led her to be hospitalized to treat the condition.

Like most SJS patients, Khaliah was initially diagnosed with the flu as the early symptoms of the SJS allergic reaction emulate the virus.

The onset of Stevens Johnson Syndrome typically occurs within the first few weeks of starting a medication or combination of medications.

Khaliah was no different as she was confused by her worsening symptoms, blistering skin, and how quickly her condition progressed. After being diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, she underwent intense treatment and is still suffering from the lasting effects of this condition.

Khaliah insists that she never would have taken Lamictal if she known about the possiblity of SJS, and states that she has now become reluctant in taking her anti-epileptic medications.

She is now wary of other adverse medication side effects, and is especially concerned with SJS recurrence.

Khaliah’s worries are well placed as experts believe that the chances of SJS are higher in patients taking multiple medications and who have already suffered SJS.

There are approximately 300 cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome diagnosed per year in the United States, with no pre-diagnostic method available to predict who may develop the disease.

Overview of Stevens Johnson Syndrome Concerns

A young Australian woman allegedly developed Stevens Johnson Syndrome soon after being prescribed the anti-epileptic. The Lamictal rash occurred after she was prescribed the drug to help treat her condition and caused near fatal medication side effects.

According to the United Kingdom’s DailyMail.com, Danika H. of New South Wales, Australia had been diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 18 years old.

A year later in May 2014, she was prescribed anti-epileptic medications Lamictal and Keppra, both of which have been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome in children and adults.

Just a day after her 19th birthday, Danika noticed she was experiencing swelling in her eyes and lips that eventually evolved into a large rash covering her entire body.

After a month of treatment, Danika managed to survive her ordeal but still suffers from the lasting effects of Lamitcal rash. Danika is now campaigning for stronger warning labels on drug packaging, to warn patients against Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
