Xarelto bleeding lawsuitA new wrongful death Xarelto bleeding lawsuit alleges that the blood thinner is dangerous and should not be sold.

The surviving spouse of a Florida man filed a Xarelto wrongful death lawsuit on May 5 on behalf of her deceased husband, John Lewis S.

Plaintiff Judy S., as representative of her late husband’s estate claims that Janssen Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and the co-marketer of Xarelto, and Bayer Healthcare AG, failed to warn patients and physicians of Xarelto side effects including risks of irreversible and fatal internal bleeding when using the blood thinner.

According to the Xarelto bleeding lawsuit, John Lewis used Xarelto beginning in 2013 through 2014 and subsequently on May 9, 2014 suffered a GI bleed. John Lewis was hospitalized and received numerous transfusions.

Unfortunately, his medical condition deteriorated after suffering this bleeding event and he died on Dec. 6, 2014, purportedly as a result of his Xarelto-induced injuries, the lawsuit states.

John Lewis leaves behind his wife, Judy, and three adult sons.

The Xarelto bleeding lawsuit claims that Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals knew of the Xarelto blood thinner side effects and continued to sell it even though they knew the dangerous risks.

The Xarelto bleeding lawsuit further accuses the defendants of purposely concealing important safety information from the medical community, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the public, and did not test the drug enough before it was put on the market.

In her Xarelto wrongful death lawsuit, Judy is seeking compensatory, economic, and punitive damages for Bayer’s, and Janssen Pharmaceutical’s alleged deceptive and reckless practices in misrepresenting and omitting numerous facts about the dangers of taking Xarelto and causing the death of her husband John Lewis in part by their gross negligence.

Xarelto Side Effects and Risks

Approved in 2011, Xarelto is one of the newest anticoagulants, and is manufactured and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer. Xarelto has been widely prescribed to prevent blood clots in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia of the heart); deep vein thrombosis (blood clots deep within the body); pulmonary bleeding; stroke; and in patients who have recently undergone a knee or hip replacement surgery.

It generally is prescribed as an alternative to Warfarin (coumadin), a blood thinner that began to be used in 1954. The most serious potential side effect, complication and risk caused by Xarelto is severe internal bleeding that can result in death. The main problem is that there is no known reversal agent that can be used in the event of a bleeding event.

Other potential injuries reportedly caused by Xarelto side effects include:

  • Thrombosis (blood clots)
  • Decreased hemoglobin (a substance that carries oxygen in red blood cells)
  • Cerebrovascular accidents (an event that leads to a cerebral hemorrhage)
  • Hematoma (a semisolid mass in the blood)
  • Peripheral edema (swelling of the lower limbs)
  • Dyspnea (difficulty breathing)
