Invokana linked to diabetic ketoacidosisInvokana (canagliflozin) is a popular type-2 diabetes medication, which has recently been associated with a severe blood disorder.

While Invokana side effects range in severity, diabetic ketoacidosis is certainly one of the most serious as it introduces a serious inconvenience to diabetic patients and substantially compounds their condition.

Approved by the FDA in 2013, the drug has since garnered s much popularity that it is estimated 450,000 Invokana prescriptions are filled every three months in the United States.

However patients have been recently complaining of severe Invokana side effects, with diabetic ketoacidosis being one of the most serious.

Patients who begin experiencing adverse Invokana side effects should contact their physician immediately for early intervention treatment for potential diabetic ketoacisosis. This medication is a part of the SGLT2 inhibitor drug family, and was the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA.

SGLT2 inhibitors are meant to be prescribed to adult patients with type-2 diabetes, and are meant to help control blood sugar levels along with diet and exercise.

Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors work by filtering excess sugar through the kidneys, and signaling the organ to expel the unneeded sugar through urination.

It is important to note that Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors only work in the presence of insulin, making these drugs inapplicable to type-1 diabetes.

Insulin is needed for glucose and sugar to be converted into energy for the cells, making it vital for most diabetic treatment medications to work.

Patients with type-1 diabetes often need an attached insulin pump to prevent diabetic attacks, and often suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis.

This blood disorder occurs when high levels of ketones, a byproduct of fat metabolism, accumulate when the body is unable to utilize glucose in cells.

When glucose cannot be extracted from cells, the body breaks down fat to compensate, which can eventually develop into a life threatening condition.

Based on scientific studies and injury reports, it is believed Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors may be causing this condition because it interacts directly with the kidneys.

Overview of Invokana Diabetic Ketoacidosis Warning

In May 2015, the FDA issued a public warning regarding Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors regarding how they may increase the chances of diabetic ketoacidosis.

The agency had issued this warning after over 20 patients had reported the blood disorder between March 2013 and April 2014, soon after using the medications. All patients had to be hospitalized for their condition, with some being admitted after an emergency room visit.

Even though diabetic ketoacidosis is a life threatening condition, the Invokana warning label does not mention diabetic ketoacidosis as a risk. Invokana patients who developed diabetic ketoacidosis may be able to file legal action against the manufacturing companies.

Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer to determine their eligibility to file an Invokana lawsuit.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
