Avelox SJS

Patients suffering from a variety of bacterial infections may be prescribed Avelox to treat their condition.

Avelox (moxifloxacin) is an antibiotic drug that belongs to the class of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. This drug is often used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, lungs, sinuses, stomach, sexually transmitted infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease, among others.

Avelox Side Effects

A variety of antibiotic side effects have been reported with the use of Avelox. Some are mild and overlap with those of other antibiotics including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Agitation
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Blurry vision
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Mouth sores
  • Nausea
  • Skin itching
  • Vomiting
  • Yeast infection

More severe Avelox side effects from its use and the use of other fluoroquinolone antibiotics include:

  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Aortic dissection
  • Tendonitis
  • Tendon rupture
  • Peripheral neuropathy

Steven Johnsons Syndrome

Another Avelox side effect that is less common but very severe is a condition called Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS).

Steven Johnsons Syndrome is an allergic reaction that occurs in response to the ingestion of a drug. It is different from an anaphylactic allergic reaction, and is mostly seen with several classes of drugs.

Symptoms of Steven Johnsons Syndrome initially appear like the flu. Body aches, chills, fatigue, pain, ans sore throat are common. Many individuals may dismiss these symptoms as being linked to the condition they sought help for, or think they might be coming down with a cold, so they are often initially ignored.

Following the flu-like symptoms, the characteristic SJS rash begins to appear. The rash may be seen in the mucous membranes of the body first, such as the mouth, nose, and eyes. The skin rash can appear anywhere on a patient’s body.

The rash itself consists of purple or red blisters and causes the skin cells it covers to die. The skin then begins to flake off of the body, exposing the delicate layers of skin below. Patients with SJS are often compared to looking like a burn victim.

If SJS spreads to cover more than 30% of the body, it is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, or TEN. The prognosis for individuals with TEN is worse, with the mortality rate ranging from 25-35%. The mortality rate for SJS is approximately 5-10%.

There is no cure for SJS. The condition is a medical emergency and patients must be hospitalized to be stabilized. Treatment consists of stopping the offending drug, pain management, wound care, IV nutrition and hydration and infection prevention to help keep patients stable.

It may take weeks or months for SJS patients to stabilize to go home. They may have little lasting damage other than scarring, or they may suffer permanent organ damage or even blindness.

Anyone can suffer from SJS at any time after taking a medication, which makes it so unpredictable. A reaction may not have been experienced if a patient took Avelox years ago, but the next time it is taken, it could cause a full blown SJS reaction.
