levaquinResearch on the devastating side effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including Levaquin side effects, is just beginning to catch up with what many patients have suspected about this class of drugs for decades.

One such study published several months ago in JAMA Internal Medicine looked at nearly 1,500 patients who were hospitalized as a result of aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection and matched each patient with 100 control cases, for nearly 150,000 in the control group.

The study concluded that Levaquin side effects and those of other fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as Cipro, Avelox, Factive, Floxin and Noroxin increased the risk of suffering an aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection nearly 2 and a half times for current antibiotic use.

Those who used fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the past also experienced an increased risk of aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection of one and a half times versus patients who had never taken that class of drugs.

What is Levaquin Used For?

Levaquin (levofloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.

In addition to aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection, Levaquin side effects have also been associated with tendonitis, tendon rupture and peripheral neuropathy in the medical literature, as well as many other conditions that have been reported by patients.

Just this month, the FDA issued a new safety warning urging physicians to restrict the use of fluoroquinolones to more severe conditions based on the troubling issues that have been observed with Levaquin side effects and other drugs in its class.

What is an Aortic Aneurysm or Aortic Dissection?

An aneurysm in general is a bulge or enlargement in a blood vessel. The aorta is a the main artery of the body that supplies oxygenated blood from the heart to the circulatory system.

If you think of water running through a garden hose where there is a weakened area, the weakened area will bulge out while the rest of the hose stays intact. This weakened area is more likely to experience a rupture in the hose, and the same goes for the blood vessels in your body.

A ruptured aortic aneurysm in the body is a very serious condition, and only about half of patients survive such an event.

An aortic dissection occurs when there is a tear in the lining of the aorta. The blood then enters through the tear, entering the wall of the aorta. The blood entering in a space where it shouldn’t makes the layers of the aorta separate, and can further tear and separate the lining, causing weakening in the wall of the aorta.

An aortic dissection can lead to an aortic aneurysm, and in turn an aortic rupture. Also, an aortic dissection can restrict the blood flow in the artery, prohibiting the blood from carrying oxygenated blood to the organs. This can lead to conditions like heart attack and stroke, paralysis, or renal failure.
