talcum powder baby powder cancerAs the talcum powder ovarian cancer litigation continues, Johnson & Johnson maintains that its talcum powder products are safe and effective despite the allegations.

The company recently lost two multimillion dollar talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits from plaintiffs who alleged Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower talcum powder causes cancer.

However, Johnson & Johnson lawyers state those verdicts were based on the confusion stemming from the plaintiff lawyers, and there was no definitive proof that talcum powder causes cancer.

J&J attorneys also state that scientists who have reviewed key studies cited by the plaintiffs, are doubtful of the talcum powder ovarian cancer link.

Even with Johnson & Johnson maintaining its defensive position, two additional talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits are scheduled for fall of 2016 – one in Missouri and the other in New Jersey.

In February 2016, a St. Louis jury had awarded $72 million to a woman who allegedly developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products for feminine hygiene.

Under the same judge in St. Louis, another plaintiff was awarded $55 million in a similar lawsuit.

Johnson & Johnson states that it will appeal both rulings, with lawyers involved in the litigation calling for the company to establish a trust for the talcum powder ovarian cancer litigation.

Overview of Talcum Powder Cancer Litigation

Currently, at least 1,400 talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits have been filed over this alleged connection. Three of these cases have already gone to trial, in which plaintiffs cited studies dating back to the 1970s to explain the risk of talcum powder cancer.

One of these studies was published in 1971 in the medical journal The Lancelet, which found talc particles in the majority of ovarian tumors examined in the study.

Ever since this first study was published, numerous other inquiries have been conducted to investigate the alleged association between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.

A more recent study was published in June 2013 in the Cancer Prevention Research medical journal, conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The 2013 study analyzed data from eight different research papers involving approximately 2,000 women, showing an increased risk of ovarian cancer by 30% in women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes.

According to the studies, talcum powder causes cancer by the little particles that enter through the woman when the powder is applied to the genital area. When women apply talcum powder to their genital area, particles enter the fallopian tubes and embed themselves in the woman’s ovaries.

These particles can be dormant for eight years, before festering into cancer cells and overtaking the reproductive system. Overall the studies indicated that talcum powder can have a 60% increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Even though the plaintiffs have cited these studies repeatedly, Johnson & Johnson states that comprehensive studies had found inconclusive links between their talc products and ovarian cancer.
