eliquis side effects

A new Eliquis lawsuit was recently filed against the pharmaceutical manufacturers Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Inc.

The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff suffered serious internal bleeding as a result of taking the blood thinning medication.

The Eliquis lawsuit was brought by Maurice J., a resident of Louisiana.  Maurice was prescribed Eliquis by his physician due to his risk of developing blood clots and risk of stroke.

According to the lawsuit Maurice suffered from internal bleeding and severe pain as a result from taking Eliquis.

Maurice is bringing claims for negligence, strict products liability, breach of warranty and several other claims.  He is asking for both compensatory and economic damages.

Compensatory damages are brought to cover the pain and suffering, emotional damages, and loss of enjoyment of life suffered by Maurice.  Economic damages are awarded to cover past and future medical expenses, lost earnings and other out of pocket expenses related to Maurice’s alleged injuries from taking Eliquis.

What is Eliquis?

Eliquis is generically known as apixaban and used after knee or hip replacement surgery to prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Eliquis received FDA approval back in 2012.

It is an oral anticoagulant and known as a Factor Xa inhibitor.  It’s a new generation of anticoagulant that is taken in a set dose.

According to the Eliquis lawsuit, approval of the anticoagulant was primarily based on a study known as Aristotle.

The lawsuit alleges that the defendants prioritized cutting costs over the reliability of the study.  In order to cut costs, the Maurice alleges that the pharmaceutical manufacturers chose incompetent and untrustworthy agents to oversee the study.

Maurice also alleges that the researchers conducting the study committed fraud by concealing serious Eliquis internal bleeding side effects some of which led to death. In 2012 the FDA told the defendants that they had allowed the study to occur with a pattern of inadequate supervision.

Eliquis Internal Bleeding: Brain and Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Internal bleeding is a side effect of all blood thinning medications but studies suggest that Eliquis may have an increased risk of internal bleeding.

Reports of brain bleeding and gastrointestinal bleeding have surfaced recently and lawsuits like the one mentioned above have been filed in federal court.

Patients who experience gastrointestinal bleeding or brain bleeding while taking Eliquis may suffer serious consequences because Eliquis has no known antidote.  Patients taking warfarin who experience internal bleeding can be given a dose of vitamin K to counteract the blood thinning effects of the medication.

According to the lawsuit the irreversibility of the Eliquis has life-threatening and fatal consequences.

Eliquis Lawsuit Information

Eliquis lawsuits have been filed by those who suffered internal bleeding side effects while taking the medication.

According to the Eliquis lawsuit brought by Maurice, Bristol Myers Squib and Pfizer failed to alert the scientific community and the public about the true safety of Eliquis.

The Eliquis Lawsuit is Case No. 1:16-cv-00579 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
