old spice class actionConsumers who developed painful rashes after using Old Spice deodorant may get their day in court thanks to two ongoing class action lawsuits.

In the more recent class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court in April, plaintiff Gregory Johnson seeks to represent what he believes are tens of thousands of Old Spice deodorant users who developed a disfiguring and painful rash after using the product.

He accuses the deodorant’s manufacturer, Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble, of knowing the product can harm users’ skin but failing to do anything about it.

Johnson alleges that numerous consumers have suffered serious injuries like “burns, rashes, blisters, redness and scarring” resulting from their use of Old Spice deodorant.

His Old Spice class action lawsuit quotes complaints about the products from many other consumers.

According to Johnson, some consumers’ complaints to Procter & Gamble got them no meaningful relief. He quotes one consumer who received nothing but coupons for more Procter & Gamble products in response to his complaints.

Despite being aware of these Old Spice Deodorant complaints, Johnson says, Procter & Gamble has taken no steps to warn consumers or to remove the offending products from the market.

Johnson himself says he bought Old Spice Swagger and Old Spice Classic deodorant and used it for a month before he broke out in a deodorant rash.

The rash progressed into open sores, he says. He ended up seeking medical treatment and paying $20 for a prescription cream, he says.

Johnson says that once he learned from news reports about other consumers’ complaints about Old Spice deodorant, he stopped using it himself. After that, his sores began to heal, he says.

According to Johnson’s attorney, dermatologists who have been consulted about the deodorant rash say the condition looks similar to rash caused by poison ivy or poison oak.

In his Old Spice class action lawsuit, Johnson says Procter & Gamble have violated California’s Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Legal Remedies Act. He also raises other claims including unjust enrichment, negligence, strict liability, and breach of warranty.

Johnson’s Old Spice Deodorant Class Action Lawsuit is Gregory Johnson V. Procter & Gamble, Case No. 3:16-cv-02302 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Other Old Spice Deodorant Lawsuits

Johnson’s Old Spice deodorant class action lawsuit comes soon after another plaintiff filed a similar claim in a federal court in Ohio. In that action, plaintiff Rodney Colley makes allegations highly similar to Johnson’s.

He says Proctor & Gamble is simply ignoring the high volume of consumer complaints about its deodorant products.

Photos included in Colley’s class action lawsuit show a visible and dark discoloration under his arm where he says he broke out in a deodorant rash after using Old Spice deodorant.

Colley also quotes negative Old Spice reviews from consumers who took their complaints to online public consumer forums.

In Procter & Gamble’s public response to the litigation, the company insists Old Spice deodorant is still safe to use. The company says that “[a] small number of men may experience irritation due to alcohol sensitivity, a common ingredient used across virtually all deodorant products.”

Proctor and Gamble suggests that men who experience deodorant rash should switch to an antiperspirant instead.

I went to med express due to the open areas and increased pain due to the rash and armpits and surrounding tissue bloody and oozing.

I’d used the Old Spice Deodorant/ Old Spice Pure Sport High Endurance Deodorant then I’d end up with a rash and had to stop using deodorant for about a week I thought it might have been the work shirt but I tried it again and broke out again wearing a plain white T-shirt. Then had to completely stop using it. And changed over to another deodorant. I found it to be both a painful and embarrassing thing to go through since I worked as an auto technician and had to deal with our customers and fellow workers on a daily bases. I ended up for the weeks that I was broke out using so much cologne to cover not using a deodorant that my coworkers would complain/ say something to me about it. As it is now I’m half afraid to use any Old Spice products at all now. It’s a shame too because I liked the night spice cologne and aftershave
