U.S. District Judge David R. Herndon, the federal judge overseeing the Pradaxa multidistrict litigation (MDL), has issued a stay for all cases in the MDL and ordered committee of lawyers to negotiate the terms of a settlement that could resolve thousands of Pradaxa lawsuits related to the drug’s alleged bleeding risks. Almost all of the Pradaxa lawsuits involve similar allegations that Boehringer failed to provide warnings to consumers and medical community about the risk of uncontrollable bleeding.
Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate), a prescription blood-thinning medication, was initially approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa was widely viewed as a welcome alternative to warfarin, the long-standing anticoagulant of choice for patients with atrial fibrillation, because it did not require patients to undergo regular blood tests or follow dietary restrictions. Despite these conveniences, many Pradaxa patients are concerned they were never properly warned about the risk of Pradaxa bleeding.
Pradaxa users have reported experiencing a variety of side effects including severe and uncontrollable intestinal bleeding, internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, Â brain hemorrhage, kidney bleeding and heart attack. The Pradaxa bleeding risk is especially dangerous because, unlike its predecessor warfarin, there is currently no Pradaxa bleeding antidote. Many people have taken legal action against Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa, alleging that the pharmaceutical company failed to warn about the risk of uncontrollable Pradaxa bleeding.
More than 2,350 federal Pradaxa lawsuits have been consolidated as part the MDL overseen by Judge Herndon. If a master Pradaxa settlement agreement is reached, there may be no need for thousands of individual trials to be scheduled across the country.
