Anthem Blue CrossAnthem Blue Cross members will see checks in the mail from a class action settlement concerning improper billing fees.

The Anthem fee settlement checks were mailed to Class Members on March 17, and are from a class action lawsuit settlement that was preliminarily approved in April 2013. The class action settlement resolves allegations that Anthem Blue Cross imposed an illegal $2 fee onto customers who opted to pay their policy through paper bills, rather than through other forms of billing, such as automatic withdrawal.

Anthem Blue Cross denied any wrongdoing but agreed to provide $4 million in refunds to consumers and pass on an additional $20 million in savings to policyholders.

Class Members of the Anthem fee settlement include all subscribers of an individual health plan or policy issued by Anthem L&H or Blue Cross who paid a $2 paper bill fee from Sept. 27, 2007 through Dec. 10, 2012 and who do not exclude themselves from the settlement class.

Anthem fee class action settlement checks go out to over 600,000 policyholders for improper billing fee refunds. Check amounts will vary depending on how much the policyholder paid for the fees.

Under the class action settlement, Anthem has agreed to reimburse a portion of those collected paper bill fees to its subscribers and to permanently refrain from imposing any paper bill fees in the future.

Class Members were not required to submit a Claim Form to receive compensation from the class action settlement.
