AndroGel lawsuitAnother testosterone product lawsuit has been filed against the makers of AndroGel, Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie.

Plaintiff Charles T., an Alabama resident, claims in the low-t drug lawsuit that he began using AndroGel in July 2013 and continued using it until approximately December 2013.

The AndroGel testosterone product lawsuit alleges that he suffered from a life-threatening blood clot after using the testosterone treatment gel.

Charles’ AndroGel lawsuit joins thousands of other testosterone product lawsuits now consolidated in federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Illinois.

What is AndroGel?

AndroGel is a topical testosterone gel manufactured by AbbVie, formerly part of Abbott Laboratories. It is a clear, colorless gel that may contains 1% or 1.62% concentrations of testosterone, which is a male reproductive hormone. AndroGel is approved and marketed to treat “hypogonadism,” a deficiency of testosterone.

FDA Warns About Risk of Serious Blood Clots

In 2014, the FDA issued a warning that testosterone replacement therapy, like AndroGel, can cause potentially dangerous blood clots in men.

Blood clots that form in veins (what doctors call venous thromboembolism) come in two forms. Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, often in the leg. It can make the affected leg swell or cause leg pain.

If a DVT, or part of one, breaks away and gets into the bloodstream, it can block blood flow to the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism.

A large pulmonary embolism can be deadly. Pulmonary embolism, along with DVT, kill as many as 180,000 Americans each year, more than the number of people who die from breast, prostate, colon, and skin cancers combined.

The FDA had previously warned about a testosterone replacement therapy-related increase in blood clots for men with a condition called polycythemia.

Polycythemia is a condition in which the body makes too many red blood cells, which increases the risk of blood clots. However, this latest warning comes from reports of blood clots in men without polycythemia.

In addition to this testosterone blood clot warning, the FDA is also warning about possible links between testosterone replacement therapy and stroke, heart attack, and death.

Testosterone Product Multidistrict Litigation

In June 2014, all testosterone therapy lawsuits filed in federal courts across the United States were centralized for coordinated pretrial proceedings into a low-t drug MDL.

The MDL covers all low-t drugs and drug manufacturers because the complaints involve similar allegations regardless of brand or manufacturer.

Allegations center on the manufacturers’ failure to provide adequate warnings regarding the potential risks associated with using testosterone replacement therapy.

The AndroGel Testosterone Product Lawsuit is Case No. 1:15-cv-07153, MDL No. 2545, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
