HughesNet Satellite Internet Class Action Settlement

By Mike Holter

HughesNet settlementHughes Communications has reached a class action lawsuit settlement that will provide either $5 or $40 cash to certain former HughesNet satellite internet subscribers.

The HughesNet settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Walter v. Hughes Communications, that alleges Hughes misrepresented the actual speed of its HughesNet internet service, unjustly cut off customers from their Internet for violating the company’s “Fair Access Policy,” and charged improper Early Termination Fees.

As part of the class action lawsuit settlement, Hughes has agreed to make cash payments to eligible Class Members who submit a valid claim form postmarked no later than September 28, 2012. Claim forms can be downloaded or submitted online at www.SatelliteInternetSettlement.com.

Class Members who paid an Early Termination Fee before December 6, 2010 will get $40 from the class action settlement, while Class Members who were no longer a Hughes Consumer Plan subscriber as of March 2, 2012 and did not pay an ETF before December 6, 2010 will receive $5.

They are false advertising online. I choose the discounted from 109.99 to $79.99 plan. 19.99 equipment leasing fee. Plus taxes. My order summary said 98.99 plus taxes. I place order take a picture after purchase but you don’t get an immediate receipt page. Go to my email and was charged $114. For the plan and a $98 one time Lease set up fee. When I’m paying $19.99 a month for the equipment lease. Which I qualified for versus paying in full up front for the equipment. So why was I charged $98 one lease fee what the heck is a lease fee??? Noone at Hughsnet can explain that to me. Never Again!

Hello My name is Martin Henry. I have been a HughesNet customer for years. During a system check a few months past they (HughesNet Server systems technician) told me I never had 30GB, The mosts I had was 15 and at that time I only had 5 GB). The billing dept. keeps giving me there is nothing they can do. I have access to my account records online and I told them and now reaching out to see what to do here. Before they cut must service. 701-370-1032.
    SO I have the evidence.

I don’t even work from home and I can’t even watch tv for 30 days without going over my limit. They want more money every month. Also, I had someone call and tell me to take my tv out of hi def so I wouldn’t use so many gbs. I’m supposed to suffer a poor quality picture so I don’t go over my allotted service. They said I could have 10 devices hooked up on 50 gbs. I’m at 200 and can’t even watch tv.

  5. Chris says:

On hold w Hughes net right now after they charged me $219 six months after I cancelled the service and sent back the modem.. they said they charged me because I didn’t send back a component tha is attached to the satellite that was professionally installed… and nowhere and at no time was I asked to send this back when I cancelled service due to extremely poor internet service. These guys are crooks.

Is there anyway to start a new class action lawsuit against HughesNet in 2023 my deal is I paid the bill for someone HughesNet kept me as the account holder and on that account the bill had been paid they continued to Bill but turned it into collection agency under my name which affected my credit. How many people has done this way.

    1. Tim fox says:

They’ve done the same thing to me for 2 years. My house burnt down i cancelled my service and theyve charged me every month since

  7. siaosi sea jr says:

Hughes needs another class action lawsuit!

    1. Arnita Combs says:

Yes they do for data gouging

    2. Janine says:

Agreed, they really misrepresented what their speeds were. Not good at all for a home business. Also, when I signed up, I was told 1 year contract. Come to find out it’s 2 years. So not only did I have to find a NEW service, I’m stuck paying Hughesnet every month for their basic basic service so I don’t have to pay something like $2000 to get out of the contract. Sucks.

      1. Tammy Thacker says:

        Did me same way

    3. Shantel m says:

I agree, I was wondering too. They persuaded me to sign up for their Internet by telling me I would receive a 300$ gift card in the mail, from them for signing up as a new customer, an guess what?never got one, ya. Got their bills just fine in the mail though. And when I followed up on it, 3 separate times, I was either “disconnected”, or just straight hung up on. I even went and checked on their website at the time (around end of Aug begining of September 2022) which said they were offering that deal to new customers (which I was) and have been getting the run around from them ever since and been with their horrible service for almost A year now. Finally just was able to switch to another company. Now just have to cancel Hughsnet, let them try and and charge me an early termination fee ahahaha. I’ll tell them to take it out of the 300$ they owe me lol.

  8. johnny rotten says:

This is the way most settlements go. Attorneys win consumers get $5.00! This supposed “settlement” is laughable.
