Risperdal side effectsJohnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen are fighting efforts by personal injury attorneys to make public its own internal clinical trials regarding the risk for Risperdal side effects in young boys, such as gynecomastia, the medical term for male breasts or “man boobs.”

The company already settled with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for billions of dollars over allegations, which the company does not have to admit to, that it promoted off-label marketing of the medication for use in populations and for conditions that the FDA had not approved, including that of adolescents and children. However, if the clinical trials are made known, it could increase the amount of evidence that the company allegedly engaged in misrepresentations regarding potential Risperdal side effects.

Currently, those records have been off limits to plaintiffs for roughly two years. Johnson & Johnson alleges that documentation created by its subsidiary, which may include information regarding the effects of the atypical antipsychotic on young men, is privileged information that should not be divulged to the public. On the other hand, Risperdal lawsuit attorneys say that it is key to understanding what the company knew about the potential for adolescents to develop man boobs and when it did.

Medical experts know that the mechanism of the medication and its interaction with dopamine receptors can lead to problems relating to hormones which naturally cause adolescence. Imbalances in these chemicals are what reportedly lead to Risperdal gynecomastia side effects, and unfortunately, some plaintiffs say that these problems do not go away. It is unclear whether or not there are treatments that can reverse these problems, or whether or not these drugs will cause permanent man boobs in adolescents that will continue as they age.

Regardless of whether or not Risperdal lawsuit attorneys achieve the release of the Janssen clinical trials, cases will still move forward. Bellwether trials are scheduled for July, but that does not preclude young men from ages 10 to 18 to try and obtain damages from Johnson & Johnson.

In general, Risperdal lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
