BAR/BRI Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

If you paid for a BAR/BRI full service bar review course between 2006 and 2011, listen up. You may be entitled to a cash payment and other benefits from a proposed class action lawsuit settlement.

The proposed BAR/BRI settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, titled Stetson, et al. v. West Publishing Corp., et al., that alleges BAR/BRI violated federal antitrust laws by agreeing with Kaplan to limit competition in the market for full service bar review courses. The owner of BAR/BRI, West Publishing, and Kaplan are both named as defendants. Plaintiffs allege that BAR/BRI agreed not to compete in the LSAT business and that Kaplan agreed not to compete in the bar review business, thereby allocating to BAR/BRI the market for full service bar review courses in the U.S. and preventing a competitive bar review course form being marketed and sold.

West and Kaplan deny any wrongdoing but have agreed to settle the case to avoid ongoing litigation. As part of the proposed BAR/BRI class action lawsuit settlement, West will pay over $5 million into a settlement fund to help reimburse Class Members for any fees they paid to BAR/BRI. Kaplan has also agreed to provide at least one Discount Certificate to each Class Member good toward a future full service bar review course.

You’re considered a Class Member of the BAR/BRI class action settlement if you paid for a BAR/BRI full service bar review course between August 1, 2006 and March 21, 2011. To participate in the class action settlement, you must submit a valid claim form postmarked on or before May 30, 2011.
