construction workers on roof regarding Edmonton leaky police building lawsuitThe City of Edmonton has lodged a lawsuit over the construction of the leaky police building that will now reportedly cost the municipality $112 million.

Edmonton’s lawsuit reportedly holds a group of individuals and companies responsible for the additional delay and damages. According to the leaky police building lawsuit, the City of Edmonton was told that the structure would be ready for use in November of 2018. However, the City was allegedly informed on Dec. 14, 2017 that the structure leaked, resulting in mold and other damage.

As a further result of the allegedly defective roof, the city claims that the HVAC system in the leaky police building was improperly constructed adding to the cost of repairs.

“The Roof of the Project was designed and constructed in a defective and deficient manner and not in compliance with the Design Work and Prime Construction contract requirements,” alleges the leaky police building lawsuit.

According to Global News Canada, the city hopes to open the Northwest Police Campus in March of this year.

A city councillor expressed frustration with the project, telling CBC News, “My hope would be that you know when you design a building you’ve thought of all those things so it’s surprising it happened and disappointing because of the delay to the community.”

Another city councillor told CBC, “I’m frustrated as the councillor for the area that the police have not been able to occupy this state of the art building,” Dziadyk said. “And we still don’t know where the leak is.”

The opening of the new Northwest Police campus was reportedly delayed in July of 2019. Originally scheduled to open in late 2019, the City of Edmonton announced that cause of leaks in the three-acre roof of the building could not be determined until the structure had gone through a freeze-thaw cycle.

The new structure was started in 2016. City of Edmonton Police are currently using a smaller building in the northwest until the problem can be identified and addressed.

The leaky police building has put the move a year behind schedule, according to the CBC, and the current situation for Edmonton police operations is not ideal. Acting chief for the Edmonton Police told CBC News that the northwest division does not have a front counter for the public to access. In addition, there are no holding cells in the current building.

The City of Edmonton is reportedly withholding payment for the leaky police building until the problems are rectified. Further, the City has authorized an additional $4.6 million to go toward the completion of the building.
