The above ground pool recall
On July 21, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a major above ground pool recall, impacting Bestway pools, Intex pools and Polygroup pools — three of the most popular pool brands in North America.
The pool recall applies to all above ground pools 48 inches or taller that feature an external restraint strap, a design flaw now believed to contribute to serious safety risks.
According to the CPSC, more than 5 million recalled pools have been sold across the United States and Canada since 2002, making this one of the largest above ground pool recalls in history.
How above ground pool defects put children at risk
The recalled above ground pools feature an external restraint strap meant to stabilize the structure by holding the legs in place. Unfortunately, this strap can act as an unintentional foothold, allowing small children to climb into the pool unsupervised, even when adults think it is secure.
This dangerous defect puts young children at serious risk of severe injury, near-drowning or fatal drowning incidents.
Common injuries linked to the recalled above ground pools
Reports have linked several serious injuries to the external restraint strap on the recalled above ground pools. Some children have used the strap to climb into empty pools, resulting in falls, broken bones and head injuries. When the pool is full, the danger increases dramatically. Multiple children have suffered traumatic brain injuries, and some have passed away due to drowning.
According to the above ground pool recall, at least 9 children between 22 months and 3 years old have drowned due to this defect, devastating families and prompting widespread concern about above ground pool safety.
How to file an above ground pool lawsuit
If your child was injured or died because of a recalled above ground pool, you may be entitled to compensation. Filing a pool lawsuit could help hold the manufacturers accountable and push for safer pool designs moving forward.
