Infotainment problems in Volvo and Polestar vehicles

Owners of Volvo and Polestar vehicles have reported a wide range of persistent problems with the infotainment system that go beyond minor software glitches. Common issues include:

  • Rearview cameras going black or lagging: Many drivers report that their backup cameras intermittently fail, freeze or display delayed video, making parking and reversing unsafe and creating a crash hazard.
  • Infotainment screens freezing, crashing or rebooting on their own: Drivers have experienced complete system freezes, unexpected reboots and unresponsive touchscreens, which can disrupt navigation, media and vehicle settings while driving.
  • Sudden loss of essential features: Critical systems — such as navigation, climate control and advanced safety features — may stop working without warning, leaving drivers without the important tools they rely on daily.

These vehicles are marketed as premium, high-end automobiles, yet these persistent infotainment problems fall far short of that standard. Beyond being a daily frustration for drivers, they can decrease the vehicle’s value and, in some cases, pose real safety risks to both drivers and passengers.

What drivers are saying

Many owners have turned to online forums, such as Reddit, to share their frustration with persistent issues with the Polestar and Volvo infotainment systems.

One Volvo XC90 Recharge owner described their experience after just two weeks of ownership, stating that the infotainment system would randomly reboot mid-drive, require manual restarts and frequently fail to connect to Android Auto or music apps.

“It’s simply difficult to fathom how they launched this system, which is so bad, on a high-end luxury car, which is so good,” the driver wrote.

Another 2025 Volvo XC40 owner reported daily Bluetooth connection problems, repeated rearview camera blackouts and frozen navigation screens that required multiple hard resets.

Across multiple models and model years, owners are reporting the same core problems — black screens, lagging cameras, unresponsive touch controls and malfunctioning safety features.

Polestar and Volvo recalls may have been inadequate

Both automakers attempted to address the infotainment issues with recalls, including a May 2025 Volvo recall of more than 400,000 vehicles and a September 2025 Polestar recall of more than 27,000 vehicles.

The recalls included a software update intended to address issues with the infotainment systems, such as frozen screens, lagging rearview cameras, and unresponsive touch controls.

However, many drivers continued to experience problems even after the Volvo recall and Polestar recall updates were installed. One Volvo owner shared:

“After getting the update, I have a ton of infotainment issues, including no sounds (not even of the turn signals), unable to answer phone calls when connected to the car via Bluetooth, delayed/no response when trying to access the settings at the bottom right corner of the screen. The drive settings keep changing, too.”

These ongoing issues suggest a deeper, systemic defect in the Polestar infotainment and Volvo infotainment systems. For affected drivers, the problems not only pose safety and convenience risks but also devalued vehicles despite the official Volvo recall.
