Many women who have used the Paragard IUD for birth control have suffered painful and serious complications after the device broke, often during the insertion or removal process. This defect has allegedly caused women to experience pain and infections, and even perforations in the wall of the uterus.
Consumers have alleged that in severe cases, the device’s defects have required unwanted hysterectomies or invasive surgeries to remove the broken pieces. As of February 2025, more than 2,900 claims have been filed against the makers of Paragard IUDs. This number is expected to grow as the first bellwether trial, scheduled for Dec. 1, 2025, approaches. The Paragard IUD lawsuits have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia, and will be litigated before Judge Leigh Martin May.

How does the Paragard IUD work?
IUDs have become a common and generally effective form of long-term birth control.
The Paragard IUD design involves a T-shape plastic frame with copper wire coiled around it, according to the Mayo Clinic. Paragard is reportedly 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.
If implanted within five days of unprotected sex, the Paragard IUD can also provide emergency contraception. The copper causes a chemical reaction that prevents fertilization.
Unlike hormonal birth control options, the Paragard IUD does not carry risks of certain birth control side effects, such as blood clots. Paragard was approved by the FDA in 1984, and has been available in the United States since 1988.
Broken IUD causes
In some cases, the lateral arm of the device has broken off.
According to ongoing Paragard IUD lawsuits, parent company Teva Pharmaceuticals USA was allegedly aware of the potential breakage that could occur during implantation and removal.
Paragard removal side effects
Paragard IUDs are removed by a healthcare provider. Some typical side effects of removal include light bleeding between periods, cramping, and pain and heavy bleeding during periods.
According to a report published in the Open Journal of Clinical & Medical Case Reports, several women have reported that the Paragard IUD can break during removal, leaving part of the device embedded in the uterus. Some of the complications caused by a broken or fractured IUD may include:
- Broken pieces getting lodged in the uterine cavity
- Uterine infection
- Pain, cramps, and/or bleeding
- Perforation by the IUD of the wall of the uterus
- Broken pieces migrating to other organs
If breakage occurs, it may require that the device be removed with serious invasive treatments such as surgery to remove any leftover pieces, which may result in infertility issues. There is also the possibility that a total hysterectomy will be needed.
Other consequences of Paragard defects
Paragard removal complications can be debilitating and interfere with a woman’s quality of life.
The alleged complications from a Paragard removal may cause pain and suffering, emotional distress, and result in significant medical bills and lost wages.
