Oxbryta has been prescribed to sickle cell patients since its release in 2019. Designed to reduce the breakdown of red blood cells and improve oxygen levels in the body, it offered hope as an innovative treatment. For many living with sickle cell disease, managing painful symptoms and severe complications like anemia has been a constant battle, making Oxbryta a promising option.
However, new studies have raised concerns about the medication’s safety, indicating that it may inadvertently increase the risk of vaso occlusive crisis—a life-threatening complication in which blood flow to vital organs is blocked. These crises can cause excruciating pain, damage to tissues and organs, and in severe cases, lead to fatal outcomes.
If you or a loved one were prescribed Oxbryta and subsequently experienced a serious medical complication, such as a vaso occlusive crisis, you may be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit to seek compensation for medical bills, lost income, as well as pain and suffering.

InIs Oxbryta hazardous?
In September 2024, Pfizer Inc., the manufacturer of Oxbryta, announced it would voluntarily withdraw the medication from the market due to safety concerns identified through post-approval studies.
This recall resulted directly from post-marketing clinical trials and real-world registry studies. The continued research found patients experienced an increased rate of vaso occlusive crises while taking Oxbryta. Pfizer also noted those in the clinical trial who received the drug showed a higher mortality rate compared to the placebo group. Based on the data arising from these studies, the drug company determined the risks outweigh the benefits of the medication.
What is a vaso occlusive crisis?
A vaso occlusive crisis is the most common clinical manifestation of sickle cell disease. This type of crisis occurs when the misshapen red blood cells cause microvascular obstruction. Such obstruction can induce ischemic injury to organs and severe, acute pain.
These events often arise without warning and can persist for several days. For some patients, vaso occlusive crises recur multiple times per year.
While a vaso-occlusive crisis may impact any part of the body, it most commonly involves the abdomen, soft tissues, long bones or joints; however, the associated pain can localize to any bodily region.
The pain associated with these events may be temporary, but the lack of circulation can cause permanent damage to organs, including the liver, pancreas and more.
