GM truck engine failure: Who’s affected?

Couple having engine problems

Did your 6.2L V8 engine lose power after a crankshaft bearing failure? Was your GM or Chevy truck still under warranty? You may be eligible for compensation. Fill out the form on this page to learn more.

Customers want reliability and durability when purchasing a truck. However, some General Motors (GM) models have exhibited premature crankshaft bearing failure, which requires a complete engine replacement.

Multiple reports of issues with the L86 and L87 variants of 6.2L V8 motors have emerged. This engine was installed in various GM and Chevy trucks, such as:

  • 2014 and later Chevrolet Silverado
  • 2014 and later GMC Sierra
  • 2015 and later Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2015 and later GMC Yukon
  • 2015 and later Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015 and later GMC Yukon XL
  • 2015 and later Cadillac Escalade
  • 2015 and later Cadillac Escalade ESV

Do you qualify?

If your engine failed under warranty due to a crankshaft bearing failure in your GM truck, Chevy truck, or Cadillac Escalade, you may be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit investigation. Fill out the form to tell us more about your experience.

Why are GM trucks’ 6.2-liter engines failing?

For years, individuals have been reporting a number of engine issues with GM trucks. These problems range in severity from an audible knocking sound to overheating and full engine seizure. Engine seizure is particularly dangerous because it can cause an immediate loss of power as well as rapid deceleration while driving.

These issues may stem from failing crankshaft bearings, which cause multiple issues in the engine, including:

  • Increased Friction: The crankshaft bearing’s primary function is to reduce friction between the crankshaft and the engine block. When it fails, friction increases, causing the engine to overheat and creating unnecessary wear on the engine block.
  • Crankshaft Misalignment: Without proper support from the bearing, the crankshaft can become misaligned. This misalignment can cause uneven wear on other engine components, such as pistons and connecting rods.
  • Oil Flow Disruption: The bearing helps regulate oil flow around the crankshaft. Oil flow may be restricted or disrupted if it fails, leading to inadequate lubrication. This can also cause engine parts to wear out faster or the engine to overheat.
  • Metal Debris: A failing bearing can shed metal particles into the engine oil, contaminating it. These metal fragments can cause further damage as they circulate through the engine, potentially damaging other components like the camshaft, lifters, and oil pump.
  • Engine Knock: The uneven wear on engine components caused by bearing failure often results in the crankshaft knocking against the engine block. This knocking sound is often a sign that severe internal damage is occurring.
  • Complete Engine Failure: If the issue is not addressed very quickly, the crankshaft may seize, meaning it can no longer rotate. This results in a complete engine failure, which typically requires a full engine rebuild or replacement.

GMC trucks, Chevy trucks and Cadillac Escalades affected by crankshaft failure

The following GM trucks equipped with L86 or L87 6.2L (376 cu in) V8 engines have demonstrated these engine failure issues:

  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • GMC Sierra
  • GMC Yukon
  • GMC Yukon XL
  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Cadillac Escalade ESV
