What are GLP-1 supplements?  

With the unprecedented success of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound, some supplement manufacturers have begun marketing products as “natural alternatives.” These so-called GLP-1 supplements are often advertised as providing similar weight loss benefits — without the potential side effects associated with prescription medications.

However, GLP-1 patches, supplements and drops do not work in the same way as prescription GLP-1 drugs, and questions have been raised about whether these products can deliver the results they claim.

Natural GLP-1 supplements vs. prescription drugs

While some products are marketed as a natural alternative to prescription GLP-1 medications, these supplements and patches do not work in the same way.

Prescription medications like Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, which mimics the body’s GLP-1 hormone. These drugs help regulate appetite by making you feel full sooner, keeping you full longer and improving your insulin response. Because of this mechanism, they are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists.

By contrast, most natural GLP-1 supplements and GLP-1 patches do not contain GLP-1 receptor agonists. Instead, they typically include ingredients such as berberine, pomegranate extract, glutamine, cinnamon and chromium. While some of these ingredients have been studied for general metabolic or weight management support, they may not replicate the effects or results of prescription medications.
