Unum Systematically Denied Legitimate Disability Claims
By Anne Bucher
More than 50 million Americans pay for disability insurance to protect them in the event that they become sick or injured. However, a growing number of policyholders are claiming that they have been denied disability payments that they should have been entitled to receive.
Unum Accused of Wrongful Disability Claim Denial
Unum is the largest provider of disability insurance in the U.S. More than 17 million count on Unum to protect them in case they are no longer able to work due to illness or disability. Whether the injury is temporary or permanent, disability insurance helps provide an important safety net to millions of vulnerable Americans.
Unfortunately, Unum has been the target of a media inquiry due to allegations that its employees systematically deny legitimate disability claims. Not only have policyholders complained that they were denied coverage for legitimate disabilities, but former Unum employees have come forward to complain that they were provided with financial incentives to deny legitimate disability claims.
On the television program “60 Minutes,” former Unum employees claimed that the company provided bonuses to employees who closed the largest number of claims. They allege that Unum set claim denial targets with the goal of saving the company money.
These employees claim that Unum relies on a number of unscrupulous business strategies to deny legitimate disability claims. They claim that Unum failed to recognize certain conditions such as mental illnesses, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Further, Unum frequently relied on its own independent medical examiners that have been known to misinterpret medical records to justify denial of Unum disability benefits. In some instances, the medical examiners would falsely conclude that the claimant had a pre-existing condition.
Number of Unum Claim Denial Lawsuits Continues to Rise
Numerous people have been affected by Unum’s wrongful disability claim denials. Many of these people have stepped up and filed Unum lawsuits. According to the “60 Minutes” program, an estimated 10,000 disability claim denial lawsuits were filed between 1992 and 2002. The plaintiffs in many of these Unum lawsuits have received millions of dollars in settlements and jury awards.
In 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor found that Unum engages in bad faith business practices and mandated that the company clean up its act. Despite this mandate, many Unum policyholders continue to experience wrongful disability claim denial.
If Your Legitimate Disability Claim Was Denied, Take Legal Action
Millions of people count on Unum to help them in case of a serious illness or injury. Unfortunately, many of these policyholders have been denied benefits even though they have a legitimate disability.
