- Where: The Global Remote Work Index evaluated 66 countries in total.
Germany, Denmark and the United States are the leading countries for remote work, according to the recently released Global Remote Work Index by NordLayer.
NordLayer, a business security solution of Nord Security, evaluated a total of 66 countries for the index with Spain, Lithuania, Netherlands, Sweden, Estonia, Singapore and France rounding out the top ten. It assessed and compared the countries to determine the overall attractiveness of remote work in each location.
The index took into account each country’s cybersecurity infrastructure, economic and social conditions, digital and physical infrastructure and response to COVID-19 as indicators of remote work attractiveness.
In general, the Remote Work Index reveals that countries in the European Union have stronger cybersecurity, taking into account infrastructure as well as response and legal measures.
Canada, the United States, Germany, the w Kingdom and Portugal, meanwhile, ranked the highest in the economic and social conditions category, which included safety, tourism attractiveness, cost of living, health care and English proficiency.
Remote workers may need to compromise on safety to gain affordability
An individual interested in remote work may have to compromise on their overall safety, however, to be in a place with better affordability, NordLayer says.
“The index shows that remote workers willing to find a cheaper location to relocate will have to compromise on aspects like general safety or the level of English spoken in the country,” Nord Security says in a news release.
NordLayer says it decided to carry out the analysis and publish its Global Remote Work Index due to what it says is an inevitability in the continued rise of remote work.
“The trend is clear — ever since the beginning of COVID-19, remote or hybrid work has become inevitable even in those companies that previously preached the importance of face-to-face interactions,” NordLayer CTO Juta Gurinaviciute says in a statement.
Individuals who choose to or are able to do remote work also qualify for a number of financial benefits, including available tax deductions and business expense reimbursements.
