Peet’s Coffee & Tea Barista Class Action Lawsuit
By Kimberly Mirando

A barista for Peet’s Coffee & Tea has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, claiming it unfairly forces baristas to share their tips with shift supervisors.
Plaintiff Thiago Maia alleges in the class action lawsuit that Peet’s policy of including shift supervisors in the tip pool with baristas and allowing them to share in the proceeds of tips left by customers violates the Massachusetts Tips Law.
The class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all current and former employees who work, or have worked, since May 2009 as baristas for Peet’s Coffee & Tea stores in Massachusetts.
Maia is seeking class restitution for all tips that have not been distributed to eligible employees and other remedies to which they are entitled, including treble damages, attorneys’ fees, and costs, according to the law.
