Chanel employees class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Jeff Melendez Cardenas filed a class action lawsuit against Chanel Inc.
  • Why: Cardenas claims Chanel violated California law by failing to compensate some of its workers for all of their hours worked and missed meal periods and rest breaks.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles.

Chanel failed to compensate some of its employees for all their hours worked and missed meal periods and rest breaks, in violation of California law, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Jeff Melendez Cardenas’ class action lawsuit claims Chanel either knew or should have known that it was not properly compensating the employees.

“(Chanel) engaged in a uniform policy and systematic scheme of wage abuse against their hourly-paid or non-exempt employees,” the Chanel class action says.

Cardenas wants to represent a class of aggrieved hourly-paid or non-exempt employees who worked for Chanel in the state of California.

Chanel knew, should have known employees were not receiving minimum wage, class action claims

Cardenas argues it was Chanel’s responsibility to be aware that its employees were not receiving overtime pay they were entitled to, proper rest and meal breaks, or even compensation for missed breaks.

The lack of compensation effectively meant that some Chanel employees were paid below minimum wage for their hours worked, the Chanel class action alleges.

Cardenas claims Chanel violated California Labor Code § 2698. He demands a jury trial and requests an award of compensatory damages for himself and all class members.

An individual filed a similar class action lawsuit against Ross Stores Inc. last year over claims the company failed to pay its employees overtime wages as required by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
