Quinnipiac University agreed to a $2.5 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it failed to refund students for on-campus tuition paid during the COVID-19 campus closures.
The settlement benefits undergraduate or graduate students of Quinnipiac University for whom Spring 2020 tuition was paid from any source (personal funds, family funds, loans, scholarships, etc.) and whose tuition and fees have not been refunded in entirety.
Students in the COVID-19 tuition class action lawsuit accused Quinnipiac University of overcharging them for spring 2020 tuition. According to the plaintiffs, their tuition and fees should have been reduced or refunded after the university closed its campus in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Quinnipiac University is a private university in Connecticut. The school closed its campus in March 2020 to comply with state mandates.Â
Quinnipiac University hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $2.5 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. Each class member will receive an equal share of the net settlement fund, estimated to be $174 per recipient. Exact payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of participating class members.
The remaining funds from uncashed checks will be deposited into the Quinnipiac University Financial Aid Appeals Fund to provide additional student aid to students.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is March 13, 2023.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for April 10, 2023.
No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members who do not exclude themselves will automatically receive a settlement payment.Â
Class members have until March 14, 2023, to submit an election form updating their address and preferred payment method. If no election form is submitted, class members will receive a check payment at their last known mailing address.
