Couple vaping on the couch“Does vaping affect your body?” is a common question with a surprising answer.

What is vaping?

“Vaping” is the common name for the use of electronic cigarettes to vaporize nicotine liquids. This creates thick clouds of nicotine vapor that can be inhaled similar to cigarette smoke. Many people may start vaping in an attempt to wean themselves off of carcinogenic cigarettes.

Vaping has also become a cultural phenomenon among young individuals in high school and college. Brands such as JUULappeal to this young audience by utilizing colorful advertisements and tasty flavors. However, some young people may underestimate the effects vaping can have on the body.

How does vaping affect the body short term?

The most notable short term effects of vaping can be attributed to the body’s reaction to nicotine.

According to Medical News Today, when the body is first exposed to nicotine, the chemical stimulates the adrenal glands which causes the release of adrenaline. When adrenaline floods the body, it immediately causes an increased heart rate, increased breathing activity, and higher blood pressure. Nicotine also influences the pancreas by causing the gland to produce less insulin, which leads to an increase in blood glucose levels.

Nicotine can also have indirect effects on the body as well. The chemical reportedly causes the brain to release dopamine in its pleasure and motivation centers. This can result in emotional effects including feelings of contentment.

Does vaping affect your body in long term ways?

Nicotine’s neurological effects are similar to those of drugs such as heroin and cocaine. This is part of what makes the chemical so addictive in the long term. Nicotine addiction can affect people no matter how old they are, but young individuals may be at an even higher risk for addiction.

Vaping can also have long term effects on cardiovascular and neurological health.

In February 2018, researchers at the Center for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco revealed that daily use of e-cigarettes may double the risk of heart attacks. The study reportedly examined outcomes of nearly 70,000 individuals. In addition to the increased heart attack risk from simply vaping, the study reportedly found that both vaping and smoking cigarettes results in a five fold increased risk of heart attack.

“The finding of increased heart attack risk for e-cigarette use, in addition to the risks of any smoking, is particularly troubling, because most people who use e-cigarettes continue to smoke cigarettes,” said lead researcher Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education.

In April 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that they were investigating the possibility that vaping was associated with seizures. At least 35 people reportedly experienced seizures after vaping within the past 10 years.

The FDA cannot say for certain that vaping causes seizures, but the agency’s commissioner Scott Gottlieb said that “as a public health agency, it’s our job to communicate about potential safety concerns associated with the products we regulate.”

Vaping and Oral Health

In addition to the risks of cardiovascular problems and seizures, an article published by CNET on July 10, 2019, claims that the use of vape pens and e-cigarettes may also result in damage to smokers’ teeth and have serious consequences for their oral health.

While some smokers believe that vaping may be a healthier option than smoking, the use of vape pens and e-cigarettes may result in many dangerous health side effects. One doctor who spoke to CNET claimed that he had seen patients who had been cavity-free for decades develop tooth decay and enamel erosion after barely a year of vaping.

Periodontist Scott Froum, a clinical associate professor in the department of periodontics at SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, published research into the effect of vaping on oral health in the Perio-Implant Advisory in January 2019. According to his research, exposure to the propylene glycol found in vaping aerosol may lead to dry mouth, cavities, and gum disease.

When propylene glycol is ingested, the breakdown of the product leads to acetic acid, lactic acid, and propionaldehyde. These chemicals are all toxic to teeth enamel and the soft tissues of the mouth. Exposure to propylene glycol may also lead to issues including enamel softening and enamel damage.

Additionally, vaping aerosol that contains flavorings increases the risk of health issues even more. According to some studies, flavored vape liquid may increase enamel damage by nearly 30 percent. As flavored vape liquids are extremely popular, millions of people may find their oral health affected by these devices.
