Xtra detergent class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Deborah Crosby filed a class action lawsuit against Church & Dwight Co. Inc.
  • Why: Crosby claims Church & Dwight falsely advertises the load amount capabilities of its Xtra brand laundry detergent products that state they can be used for 116 loads.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Illinois federal court.

Church & Dwight Co. falsely advertises that certain bottles of its Xtra brand laundry detergent are sufficient for 116 loads of laundry, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Deborah Crosby claims the Xtra detergent product only contains enough for 116 loads if it is based on medium loads and “measured to Bar 5 as directed.”

Crosby argues consumers understand “loads” in the context of laundry as referring to full units — an understanding allegedly confirmed by the U.S. Department of Energy.

“It determined that the term ‘full load’ is widely understood by consumers, washing machine manufacturers and detergent companies as referring to a load size that takes advantage of the whole usable capacity of the clothes washer,” the Xtra class action states.

Crosby wants to represent an Illinois class and multi-state consumer fraud class of individuals who have purchased Xtra detergent stating that it contains enough to be used for 116 loads of laundry.

Consumers who do large loads of laundry can only do around 58 loads with Xtra detergent, says class action

Consumers who do loads of laundry “either large or above” will, in reality, only be able to do around 58 loads of laundry using the Xtra detergent — a number allegedly disclosed on Xtra’s website, the Xtra class action alleges.

Crosby argues consumers would ultimately have to turn the Xtra detergent bottle around and navigate “hundreds of words” to see that the load count is based on medium loads and measured to Bar 5.

“Plaintiff did not notice the small asterisk next to ‘Loads’ beneath the highlighted number nor did she read the small print at the very bottom on the back of the container,” the Xtra class action states.

Crosby claims Church & Dwight is guilty of unjust enrichment, fraud, and negligent misrepresentation, and of violating the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, several state consumer fraud acts, and the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of monetary, statutory, and or punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against Church & Dwight in June 2022 by a consumer arguing the company misled consumers about the load amount capabilities of its Arm & Hammer brand laundry detergent.

I have a large family it was 7 or 8 of us til they got grown. We have used ultra detergent for almost all my kids child hood my oldest is 27. I would have to buy two of them to do laundry outside of the house and I have to use almost a third of the bottle on one load. It’s watery and I have never got 118 loads of nothing. You are very right I joked with my boyfriend about never being able to use the same one twice. These company’s have to stop this.

Many people purchase huge containers of this product because you think you are getting an amazing deal .Compare the price Ulta @ $7.34 for 116 loads to Tide @,18.00-20.00 .The state of the economy especially trying to climb out of the mess COVID left us with .. Especially large families that are trying to get by..most on tight budgets HOWEVER..IThe Ultra for one is not the most effective detergent on the market and noticeably more thinner every single time I purchase it….or maybe it is just me..Please contact me .I do not live in that State but am very interested in following this article for sure .and filing myself if this takes off .Thank you l
