A Fabletics membership charges consumers $49.95 each month – a subscription cost which turns into credits for consumer accounts.
How Does Fabletics Membership Work?
A Fabletics membership costs $49.95 a month and provides discounts on Fabletics workout gear. Unlike other memberships, which involve consumers paying a fee for access to a service, the cost of a Fabletics subscription is applied to a consumer’s account as a “credit” which consumers can spend on the website. The brand says that these credits “never” expire and consumers can spend them “whenever” they want.
According to the brand’s website, members have until the 5th of every month to “skip” their monthly payment of nearly $50. If consumers don’t skip the monthly charge, they will reportedly be charged on the 6th of the month.
How to Cancel Fabletics Membership
The Fabletics website claims that it is “easy to cancel” a membership at any time by calling member services at 844-FABLETICS (844-322-5384) anytime or by using the website’s online chat service between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST.
Unfortunately, consumers argue that cancelling their Fabletics membership was anything but easy.
Some consumers say they didn’t realize that they signed up for a membership when making a purchase. Only after being charged the monthly $49.95 charge did these consumers realize their error.
The Huffington Post detailed the experiences of one consumer, Julia, who says she was unable to have her membership cancelled by the company. Allegedly, Julia called multiple times to confirm that her membership was cancelled. Despite this, she reportedly continued to receive VIP emails from Fabletics and to be charged a monthly membership charges.
“I took the initiative to contact the company via e-mail, phone and Twitter and got contradictory responses,” Julia told the Huffington Post. “I was told over the phone that my account was canceled, without having to provide a confirmation or account number. When I tweeted, one person said the account was canceled and another told me I had to do it over the phone.”
Is Fabletics a Scam?
Frustrated with their experiences, many consumers have dubbed the Fabletics membership system a “scam.” Certain consumers have taken to Fabletic’s Better Business Bureau page to voice their concerns. Over the past three years, 569 total complaints have reportedly been filed with the bureau about the company’s practices.
Many of these complaints take issue with the Fabletics membership structure and failure to cancel memberships as asked.
One complaint claimed that Fabletics failed to cancel a membership despite consumer requests. In fact, the consumer was allegedly charged four times for the membership after trying to cancel. The complaint writer says that they found out that their membership was not actually cancelled and was only “skipped” for a month.
Although the complaint writer says they eventually got their membership cancelled, they were allegedly told they cannot get a refund of the credits in their Fabletics account. Instead, they were allegedly told to use the credits within the year or the credits would be lost.
“This scheme essentially involves taking customers’ money before actually providing them with any service or product and then limiting the items they can actually apply it to and then refusing to provide a refund if the customer is unable to find anything of value to apply the membership credits to,” another complaint reads.
Can You Get a Fabletics Membership Refund?
If you were charged for a Fabletics membership despite cancelling your subscription, you can reach out to the company to dispute the charge. If this avenue doesn’t result in a membership prefund, you may be able to speak to your bank about having the charges declared fraudulent and reversed.
Unfortunately, these reasonable attempts at finding a refund may not always work. Even after cancelling memberships and disputing charges with the company, some consumers have said that they received repeated monthly charges on their accounts.
In these and other cases, legal action may be right for you. If Fabletics or other fashion subscription companies are failing to refund consumers or deceiving them when it comes to their membership, they may be in violation of federal or state laws.
In fact, Fabletics has already faced legal action from district attorneys in California. In 2014, Justfabulous Inc. – the operator of JustFab, Fabkids, Shoedazzle, and Fabletics – agreed to pay over $1.8 million to Santa Carla and Santa Cruz district attorneys to resolve claims that they violated state law. The district attorneys argued that the fashion subscription sites did not “clearly and conspicuously” explain the terms of their memberships, thereby misleading consumers in violation of California law.
Consumers who have struggled with their Fabletics membership and securing a refund may be eligible to speak to a qualified attorney about this issue.
