Michigan magazine subscribers have secured a near $1 million class action settlement ending claims that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia shared consumers’ information with outside sources.

Class Members include both a direct and indirect purchaser Class. Direct purchasers include those who subscribed to Martha Stewart Living magazine or Martha Stewart Weddings magazine from a Michigan street address from July 31, 2010 and July 31, 2016 and who also obtained their subscriptions directly from Martha Stewart or the Meredith corporation.

The indirect purchaser Class includes those with a Michigan street address who subscribed to the magazines during the same time, but got their subscriptions from a third party.

The Martha Stewart class action lawsuit claims that the company sold subscriber information without their knowledge or consent. According to the plaintiffs, the sale of such information violates Michigan law protecting that residents’ privacy.

The Martha Stewart class action lawsuit alleges that the Meredith Corporation, which owns Martha Stewart Living and Martha Stewart Wedding magazines, made millions selling subscriber information to advertisers and other third parties.

The plaintiffs claim that Michigan residents are entitled to additional privacy protections, but Meredith provided subscriber information, including gender, age, and email address to third parties.

Further, according to the Martha Stewart class action lawsuit, this was not the first time the magazine company was accused of selling Michigan residents’ personal information in violation of the state’s Video Privacy Protection Act.

Meredith and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia agreed to pay $965,000 to end the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Martha Stewart class action settlement agreement, direct purchaser Class Members will receive a $50 to $75 cash payment. The companies have also agreed to refrain from selling subscriber information from Michigan residents for three years.

To make a claim as a direct purchaser in the Martha Stewart class action settlement, Class Members may submit a Claim Form online or by mail. A Class ID number is required for claims made online.

The deadline to object to or opt out of the Martha Stewart Living subscriber privacy class action lawsuit is June 17, 2019.

Got a check for $64.53 yesterday.

  2. Jean says:

They should add a 3rd category, “Indirect Unsubscribers.” I started receiving Martha Stewart Living Magazine under another persons name using my address here in Montana!! No one by that name has ever lived in this house. I called a company called, Subco, who sends out these magazines for the Martha Stewart Magazine. I never got a honest reason how they got my address.
