Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 15,000 motorcycles due to a defect that can cause the motorcycles’ brakes to lose function while riding.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Oct. 9. It applies to 15,778 model year 2022 Harley-Davidson FXRST and model year 2022-2024 Harley-Davidson FXLRST motorcycles.

According to the Harley-Davidson recall, the front brake lines may contact the fuel tank and become damaged, possibly resulting in a brake fluid leak and a loss of front brake function.

“A loss of front brake function can increase the risk of a crash,” the recall says.

Harley-Davidson said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the brake issue so far. The company is not currently facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely, as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

The issue goes back to the assembly process, the company said, in which the brake lines on some of the subject motorcycles may have been bent. To remedy the problem, dealers will inspect the brake lines and replace them as necessary, free of charge, Harley-Davidson says.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Oct. 21, 2024.

In October, Harley-Davidson recalled more than 40,000 model year 2024 motorcycles due to a defect that can cause a loss of electrical power while in motion. In that recall, the motorcycle company said that one of the wires on the motorcycles may rub on the front corner of the crankcase. Over time, the wire insulation can wear, exposing the wire and potentially causing a short to ground.
