Consumers may be eligible for a Louisville Slugger baseball bat replacement or discount voucher for a new baseball bat under a recent Wilson Sporting Goods class action settlement.

The settlement benefits individuals who purchased a new Louisville Slugger Prime 915 BBCOR baseball bat, a new Louisville Slugger Prime 916 BBCOR baseball bat, or a new Louisville Slugger Prime 917 BBCOR baseball bat from retailers after April 21, 2015.

Plaintiff George Alea filed his class action lawsuit against Wilson and Louisville Slugger in January 2017. Alea claimed that the connection between the barrel and handle is defective in certain Louisville Slugger bats. The defect reportedly causes the bats to fall apart.

The Louisville Slugger class action lawsuit was almost dismissed, prompting Alea to argue against the motion in May 2017. He claimed that Louisville Slugger and Wilson failed to replace the allegedly defective baseball bats under warranty.

Despite arguments in litigation, Alea and the sporting goods manufacturers reached a settlement in December 2018. Louisville Slugger and Wilson do not admit any wrongdoing by settling the case, and instead seek a resolution that will benefit all parties.

Under the Wilson Sporting Goods class action settlement, consumers who purchased defective bats may be able to have their products replaced or get a discount on a new bat.

In order to be eligible for replacement or discount, consumers must submit a valid Claim Form with proof of purchase by Oct. 10, 2019.

Within two weeks of submitting a Claim Form, consumer will be contacted to have their bat inspected for no charge. Inspection will take around three weeks.

If the claimant’s bat is found to be defective, the company will send a replacement. If the claimant’s bat is found to not be defective, Class Members will be offered a 20 percent discount voucher or the return of their bat.

The objection and exclusion deadline for this settlement in May 6, 2019. The final approval hearing is scheduled for June 4, 2019.
