An Ohio farm that supplies fresh vegetables to Walmarts, Krogers and other major supermarket chains has expanded a major produce recall, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The expanded recall for โโdozens of Wiers Farm vegetables was published July 22 on the Ohio Department of Agriculture website.ย
It applies to Wiers Farm products like green beans, cucumbers, and peppers that were packed between July 5 and 12 and then distributed to retailers in 13 states. A full list of recalled products can be seen here.
According to the expanded recall, the produce items may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall states that Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis. Depending on the severity of the illness, symptoms may last from days to several weeks.ย
โConsumers who have consumed the affected product and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues should seek medical attention,โ the recall says.
The company says no illnesses or consumer complaints related to the products have been reported to date. Weirs Farms is not currently facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.ย
Products sold in bags and loose
According to the recall, the produce mostly comes in bags but is sold individually or by the pound. The recalled produce was distributed to Walmart, Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Kroger and other supermarket chains in various states. Those include Connecticut, New York, North Carolina and Virginia.ย
The recall follows an earlier notice on July 12, when Wiers Farm voluntarily recalled a limited number of whole cucumbers with a pack date of June 5 and two-pound bagged salad cucumbers with a pack date of June 5 and June 6 because they might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.ย
In 2023, U.S. food safety watchdogs warned consumers about a major frozen fruit product recall affecting some of the largest retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Whole Foods and Trader Joeโs. That recall was for frozen fruit products linked to pineapple that may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.ย
