Van’s International Foods INc. issued an urgent recall for some of its waffle products as they may contain undeclared wheat.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall July 3. It applies to certain packs of Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles with lot code UW40193L, expiration date Jan. 19, 2024, and UPC 0 89947 30206 4.
According to the Van’s recall, some of the packs of waffles may contain undeclared wheat.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the Van’s waffles recall states.
To date, no allergic reactions or illnesses associated with eating the affected product have been reported, according to the recall. Van ‘s is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Customer alerted company to issue, Van’s waffles recall states
Van‘s initiated the recall after a consumer notified the company that certain products containing wheat were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat.
“Subsequent investigation indicates that the problem was caused by the inclusion of a limited number of cartons for Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles with a pallet of cartons intended for wheat containing products,” the Van’s recall says. “Immediate steps were taken to prevent recurrence.”
Van’s says the recalled products should not be consumed. Anyone who has a recalled product in their possession should dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
The recalled waffles were shipped to distribution centers and retail stores in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina and Washington, according to the recall notice.
Van’s has not been in the news for some time, but in 2015, it settled a $9 million class action over allegations it mislabeled products as “all natural” when they contained artificial or synthetic ingredients.
