girls playing with recalled magic wandThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that Toysmith is recallinmg one of its children’s toys — the Light-Up Magic Wand.

Reportedly, the wands can pose a choking and ingestion hazard to young children. Customers who purchased the wands are eligible for a refund.

According to the CPSC, the wands have a battery pack, and the cover can detach and expose the button-cell battery.

Children may possibly be at risk for choking on or swallowing the batteries. Unfortunately, the recall was implemented after Toysmith received a report of one child swallowing a battery from the toy. Medical attention was required to remove the battery, says the CPSC.

The recall was implemented on Dec. 19, 2019 in order to prevent more children from experiencing the risk. Customers are advised to stop their children from using the wands, and to place them out of reach of children.

Customers can return the wands to the store where they purchased them for a full refund. Customers who have questions about the refund can contact Toysmith at 800-356-0474 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The company can also be reached by email at info@toysmith.com or on their website by clicking on the “Safety Info” tab at the bottom of the page for more information.

The recall affects around 58,000 units of the Toysmith Light-Up Magic Wand sold in the United States, and 204 units sold in Canada.

The magic wands are fuchsia colored and are topped with a star. The star flashes and makes noise. The affected wands were manufactured between March 2018 and June 2019 — to identify if a magic wand was made between these dates and therefore subject to recall, customers can find the manufacturing date code printed in white on the bottom of the wand.

The UPC code 085761220034 is located on the hangtag for the product.

The Toysmith Light-Up Magic Wands were sold for around $5 between June 2018 and October 2019. They were sold at a number of retailers, including Carter’s.

The Light-Up Magic Wands were manufactured in China and imported by Toysmith of Sumner, Wash. The recall number is 20-045. The recall was implemented in conjunction with Canada, to best protect affected consumers in both countries.

Unfortunately, the Light-Up Magic Wand is not the only children’s product that has been recalled recently. In September, the CPSC reported that the Beaufort Bonnet Handmade Knit Dolls had been recalled over concerns that there might be needles still in the toys, posing a possible injury hazard to children. In October, IKEA recalled the MATVRA bib, because the bib’s snap reportedly could detach and pose a choking hazard to children.
