Recall announced for ground black pepper sold nationwide

UBC Food Distributors issued a nationwide recall for its Baraka Ground Black Pepper. The recall affects 7-ounce plastic containers with an expiration date of January 2026 and UPC 8 22514 26626 6.

UBC recalled the pepper due to potential salmonella contamination, according to the recall notice. Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

UBC initiated the recall after the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets detected salmonella in routine state surveillance samples, the recall notice states. Production is suspended as the Food and Drug Administration and UBC Food Distributors investigate the contamination source. While no illnesses have been reported, the FDA advises consumers to return the recalled pepper to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Infant formula recall updated due to bacteria contamination

Dairy Manufacturers alerted parents that a sample of its Crecelac infant formula tested positive for cronobacter spp, a bacterium that can cause severe bloodstream and central nervous system infections like sepsis and meningitis.

The notice, issued June 4, follows the recall of all lots of its infant formula 11 days earlier due to the FDA’s inadequate evaluation.

One lot of Crecelac Infant 0-12 with an expiration date of August 2025 was contaminated, according to the recall notice. Dairy Manufacturers sold the product in Texas, and no injuries have been reported.

Parents who purchased this formula should stop using it immediately and return it for a full refund, the recall states. It affects several infant formula products from Dairy Manufacturers, including Crecelac Infant 0-12, Farmalac 0-12 and Farmalac 0-12 Low Lactose, all with expiration dates of August-September 2025.

Costco issues recall for Tillamook cheeses due to potential plastic contamination

Costco issued a recall for certain Tillamook cheese products after discovering gray and black plastic pieces in some of the items.

The recall affects 32-ounce twin-pack packages of Tillamook Colby Jack and Monterey Jack cheese slices, specifically those with a best-by date of Oct. 22, 2024. Tillamook distributed the cheese to Costco locations in the Northwest region, according to the recall notice. The company advised customers to return the recalled cheese slices to their local Costco for a full refund.

In a letter to Costco members, Tillamook says it initiated the recall out of an abundance of caution. The presence of plastic material is considered minimal, and consumers who have already eaten the cheese without issues need not take further action. For additional information, consumers can contact Tillamook via email or phone at 855-562-3568.

Good Earth announces recall for 1.2M rechargeable lights following death

Good Earth Lighting recalled more than 1.2 million rechargeable integrated lights due to overheating batteries that pose a fire and burn risk.

The recall, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced June 6, follows incidents where overheating lights caused a house fire resulting in one fatality and another person treated for smoke inhalation. The company is also aware of nine additional reports of lights overheating, six of which led to fires and property damage, according to the recall notice.

The recall affects rechargeable lights with model numbers RE1122, RE1145, RE1362 and RE1250, including about 37,800 sets sold in Canada, the recall states. Consumers should stop using the lights immediately and contact Good Earth Lighting for a free replacement. The company is not offering refunds but will provide a replacement light of equal value, including free shipping.

Salmonella contamination sparks cream cheese recall in 19 states

Schreiber Foods Inc. recalled more than 830,000 units of cream cheese products across 19 states due to potential salmonella contamination.

The recall affects various brands, including Dutch Farms, Fareway, Happy Farms, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Our Family, Schnuck, Essential Everyday, Dunkin, Piggly Wiggly and Schreiber Foods, as reported by Food Safety News. Schreiber Foods distributed the cream cheese to California, New York, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

The FDA published the recall notice May 3. Schreiber Foods advises consumers to either dispose of the affected cream cheese products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund, according to the recall notice. Additionally, on May 6, Hy-Vee issued a recall for two varieties of its cream cheese spread—Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread and Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix—due to similar salmonella concerns. The company has not received any reports of illness related to the recall.
