Suntegrity sunscreen recalls overview:

  • Who: Suntegrity Skincare recalled nine lots of Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation.
  • Why: The company found higher than acceptable microbiological mold count in some tubes of the sunscreen foundation.
  • Where: The Suntegrity sunscreen recall is active in the United States.

A company that makes skin care and sunscreen products recalled nine lots of its foundation containing sunscreen as they may be contaminated with mold.

Suntegrity Skincare published a voluntary recall for its Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation in multiple shades on June 11.

The company says it initiated the recall after its May 24 discovery that some tubes of its Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation had a higher than acceptable microbiological mold count, the recall notice states. It says the mold count developed after releasing the product and over time.

The recall applies to Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation with lot numbers 115BU, 107IV, 107NU, 109NU, 117BU, 113SA, 114SA, 106BR and 101MO.

Suntegrity Skincare says it is recalling these lots out of an abundance of caution even though all original and recent test results have so far come back clear, according to the recall notice.

Risks of a high mold count

According to the recall, a topical product contaminated with the mold discovered in the foundation, aspergillus sydowii, could potentially cause an allergic skin reaction.

It could also cause a primary fungal skin infection if used on open wounds or sunburned skin, and, if introduced into the eye, eye infections may occur.

“A primary skin infection due to aspergillus species in an immunocompromised individual should be treated medically,” the recall notice says.

Suntegrity Skincare has not received reports of customers harmed by the product. The company is not facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

The company distributed Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation online and nationwide via retail stores, the recall notice states. It notified distributors, retailers and website customers by email and is arranging for all recalled products to be thrown out.

Depending on where the product was purchased, Suntegrity is offering either an exchange, a refund or store credit.

Meanwhile, consumers recently filed several false advertising class action lawsuits against the manufacturers of Equate, Sound Body, MISSHA, A’pieu and Supergoop sunscreen products.
