Multiple Health Canada recall alerts were announced recently for various food products, including pork loin, ground veal, and tahina.
PC Brand Maple Apple Seasoned Pork Loin Recall
On Jan. 6, 2020, Health Canada issued a statement noting that a certain type of President’s Choice (PC) brand seasoned pork loin contains mustard that is not included on the ingredient’s list, posing a hazard to those who may be allergic to mustard.
“If you have an allergy to mustard, do not consume the recalled product as it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction,” warns the Health Canada recall notice.
Health Canada also notes that the PC Brand Maple Apple Seasoned Pork Loin recall was initiated by the manufacturer. As a result, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will conduct a food safety investigation. This investigation may result in other recalls, says the Health Canada recall notice.
Scarpone’s Italian Store Brand Frozen Ground Veal Recall
Health Canada issued another recall notice for frozen ground veal produced by Scarpone’s Italian Store for concerns over E. coli contamination.
The notice, issued on Jan. 13, 2020, says that the recall covers frozen ground veal sold between Dec. 23, 2019 and Jan 13, 2020 at The Italian Store in Calgary. The product came in various sizes and the UPC code starts with 0200904. Reportedly, the product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
Though no illnesses have been reported, Health Canada warns that consumers should not eat any of the recalled product. Instead, consumers should either throw it out or return it to the store.
“Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” states the Health Canada recall notice.
Symptoms of an E.coli infection may vary but can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps, and watery or bloody diarrhea.
“In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage,” Health Canada notes. “In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
Alkanater Brand Tahina Health Canada Recall
A Health Canada recall notice has also been issued for a brand of tahina for suspected salmonella contamination. Tahina is a sesame seed paste seasoned with lemon juice and garlic.
The Alkanater brand of the product, made by Phoenicia Group Inc., was distributed in Quebec and Ontario at retail locations, according to the notice.
The recalled Alkanater brand tahina was sold in 454 gram units with UPC code 6 92551 00002 0. Codes on the recalled product include PRO: 08/20/2018, EXP: 08/20/2020, and LOT: TT4N-180820.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness. Health Canada says that the recalled product should be thrown out or returned to the location where it was purchased.
“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections,” notes the Health Canada recall notice. “Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”
