  • Why: The medleys may be contaminated with E. coli.
  • Where: The carrot recall is active in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

A California company  is recalling some of its vegetable medleys after discovering the carrots in them may be linked to a deadly E. coli outbreak.

4Earth Farms announced the vegetable recall Dec. 2 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website. It applies to multiple brands of Organic Vegetable Medley, Conventional Vegetable Medley, and Organic Whole Carrots, a full list of which can be seen here

According to the recall, the carrots in the medleys may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121:H19. The recall was initiated after 4Earth Farms was notified by Grimmway Farms that carrots used in the Vegetable Medleys and Whole Organic Carrots may have been contaminated with E. coli O121:H19.

Recall comes amid illness outbreak linked to carrots

In November, Grimmway Farms issued two large-scale recalls of carrots sold across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The recall came amid an FDA investigation into illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121:H19 infections linked to the company’s organic whole and baby carrots.

As of Nov. 22, the FDA had recorded 39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations and one death in relation to the outbreak. No illnesses have been reported to 4Earth Farms to date in relation to the company’s recalled vegetable medleys.

“The recalled product should no longer be available for purchase but may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers,” the 4Earth vegetable recall says. “If consumers still have recalled products in your home, do not eat or use them, throw them away, and clean and sanitize surfaces they touched.”

The recalled vegetables were distributed to California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, and have “Best By” dates of Sept. 7, 2024 through Nov. 02, 2024.
