  • Why: The salmon slices may be contaminated with listeria.
  • Where: The salmon slices recall is active in Kroger and Payless Supermarkets across 15 states in the United States.

Packaged smoked salmon slices sold in Kroger and Payless Supermarkets in 15 states nationwide have been recalled due to potential listeria contamination.

Foppen Seafood issued the recall of one lot of its Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices – Toast sized, 8.1 oz, June 25 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website.

According to the recall, routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in Lot 412 of the product.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis. Symptoms vary from a fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, to headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in more serious cases.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including older people, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems, the recall says.

Do not consume the recalled salmon, notice says

The recalled salmon slices were sold at Kroger and Payless Supermarkets in AL, AR, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MI, MO, MS, OH, SC, TN, TX and WV.

Customers can check to see if salmon they purchased by checking for “LOT 412” in the clear plastic window cut out on the front of the package.

Customers who have purchased the affected Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices with lot number 412 are advised not to eat it, the recall says, and should instead return the salmon to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement.

“At Foppen Seafood, we operate to the highest standards of health, safety and quality control. We have taken immediate steps to address this isolated incident and we are collaborating closely with Kroger and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure a swift resolution,” the company said in the recall notice.

Meanwhile, last month, two California district attorneys sued Kroger on behalf of health-conscious California consumers, alleging the food producer understates the calories in some of its bread products.
