- Why: The containers may be contaminated with salmonella.
- Where: The recalled baby arugula was sold in select Publix supermarket outlets nationwide.
A Florida company has recalled containers of baby arugula sold in Publix supermarket locations nationwide, as the salad ingredient may be contaminated with salmonella.
The recall was published June 8 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website. It applies to one lot of 4-ounce containers of baby arugula produced by Green Life Farms in Lake Worth, Florida, with Lot Number LW15124 and a sell by date of 6/15/24.
The company says the arugula could potentially be contaminated with salmonella. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled baby arugula so far.
Company found salmonella in routine testing
The recalled containers of baby arugula were available for sale at select Publix locations from May 31, the recall says.
The company said routine testing revealed the presence of salmonella in a single harvest of baby arugula. Green Life Farms says it took “immediate corrective action” and that additional harvests remain unaffected.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and some people may also have nausea, vomiting, or a headache, the Centers for Disease Control says.
Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and usually lasts four to seven days. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.
Consumers urged to return recalled arugula
People who bought the recalled baby arugula are “urged” to return it to the place they bought it for a full refund, the company said.
Meanwhile, Hormel Foods has recalled two specific lots of Planters nuts after the nuts were distributed to Publix and Dollar Tree in a total of five states. The Planters nuts recall includes Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts sent to Publix distribution centers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina and Dollar Tree distribution centers in South Carolina and Georgia.
