Recall Alert: EcoBoulder Speakers Can Overcharge, Burst

Grace Digital recently recalled their ECOXGEAR EcoBoulder speakers due to concerns that the electronics can burst.

On Nov. 20, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Grace Digital Inc. would be recalling their ECOXGEAR EcoBoulder speakers.

According to the agency, the speaker’s battery is at risk of becoming overcharged. If the battery becomes overcharged, it can reportedly burst – posing a fragmentation and impact hazard.

ECOXGEAR has received five reports of the speaker batteries bursting and fragmenting. Two of these incidents involved property damage but no reports of injuries have been received by the company.

The ECOXGEAR EcoBoulder speakers are Bluetooth enabled speakers that stand around 20 inches tall and 15 inches wide. Each speaker is primarily black in color with a rubber slip mat on top and color accent in either orange, black, yellow, red, or blue.

Around 88,000 units are affected by the recent recall. The speakers were reportedly sold for about $180 at Academy Sports, Cabela’s, Home Depot and Best Buy stores between October 2016 and January 2017 and online at Amazon.com from January 2018 to December 2018.

On the ECOXGEAR website, the manufacturer notes that only a “limited number” of the speakers are equipped with batteries.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on this issue and have decided to implement a voluntary safety modification to the battery compartment,” the ECOXGEAR website states.

Consumers who purchased the recalled speakers can reportedly contact ECOXGEAR to receive a free battery replacement kit. While waiting for the kit, consumers are urged by the CPSC to stop using the recalled speakers.

There have been a variety of recalls announced by the CPSC this month.

On Nov. 8, the CPSC announced the recall of Skylight digital frame power adaptors. According to the product regulator, the adaptors can break off in the electrical outlet. This leaves the metal prongs exposed and poses a risk for electric shock. Replacement power adaptors are reportedly available to remedy the issue.

The CPSC announced on Nov. 13 that certain Hooey youth sweatshirts would be recalled due to strangulation concerns. The ties on the sweatshirts can reportedly become caught on objects in a child’s environment, posing a “significant” strangulation risk. Consumers have been instructed to remove the drawstrings from the sweatshirt hoods to mitigate the hazard.

Another recall was announced on Nov. 15 when the CPSC revealed that ALOCANE Emergency Burn Pads would be recalled due to a poisoning risk. These pads contain lidocaine, a numbing agent that make the product effective in burn treatment. Unfortunately, the packaging for the products fails to meet child safety requirements – meaning that they could pose a poisoning risk to children.
