  • Why: The kiwi may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
  • Where: The kiwi listeria recall is active in 14 U.S. states.

David Oppenheimer and Co. I LLC has issued a recall of all Zespri-brand 1-pound clamshells of organic green kiwifruit, as they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall Aug. 8. It applies to 1-pound clear plastic clamshells bearing the Zespri brand and UPC code 8 18849 02009 3 and containing fruit stickered with the GTIN barcode 9400 9552.

According to the recall, the kiwis may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health’s routine sampling discovered the issue July 7, 2023, the kiwi recall states.

Since being notified Aug. 3, David Oppenheimer and Co. worked with Zespri to trace the product through the supply chain to two grower lots and immediately ceased distributing them as it continues its investigation, the kiwi recall says.

David Oppenheimer and Co. shipped the recalled kiwifruit between June 14, 2023, and July 7, 2023, to retail locations in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. Zespri organic green kiwifruit sold in other states is not subject to the recall.

Consumers who still have any of these products should discard it immediately without consuming.
