  • Why: The vehicles can accelerate unexpectedly.
  • Where: The Nissan Leaf recall is active in the United States.

Nissan recalled more than 66,000 Nissan Leaf vehicles due to an issue where some of the vehicles can accelerate unexpectedly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website published the recall July 17. It applies to 66,159 of the automakerโ€™s 2018-2023 model Leaf vehicles.

According to the recall, the affected vehicles may accelerate unintentionally if the driver changes the driving mode after disengaging the cruise control.

โ€œIf this condition occurs, in certain operating conditions the vehicle may continue accelerating unless the brake is applied or may not slow down as expected following release of the accelerator pedal, which may increase the risk of a crash,โ€ the Nissan Leaf recall states.

Nissan is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents or injuries related to the issue, according to the recall.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Dealers to reprogram vehicles, Nissan Leaf recall states

After a full investigation, Nissan says it assessed the risk of the issue occurring under real-world conditions as โ€œvery low.โ€ย

โ€œThis issue has not occurred outside of controlled track or simulated test environments. However, out of an abundance of caution, Nissan decided to conduct a recall campaign to reprogram the vehicle control module,โ€ the Leaf recall states.

Dealers will reprogram the vehicle control module free of charge. Nissan expects to mail owner notification letters Aug. 30, 2023.ย

Nissan issues recall throughout the year but in January, it announced it experienced a data breach that affected one of its third-party service providers and exposed the private information of almost 18,000 of the automakerโ€™s customers.ย
