Hard Boiled Egg Recall Expanded by the CDC

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), potential listeria contamination has led to a hard boiled egg recall affecting major retailers.

In a Food Safety Alert, the CDC states that Almark Foods recently expanded a hard boiled egg recall to include all eggs produced at its facility in Gainesville, Ga. The recall reportedly affects products sold at Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe’s.

According to CBS News, the hard boiled egg recall also affects Great American Deli egg salad sandwiches sold at convenience stores and in vending machines.

The Food and Drug Administration has also relayed the recall announced on Dec. 23, 2019. According to that announcement, Trader Joe’s locations in the following states are affected by the hard boiled egg recall: Alabama, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

The products included in the hard boiled egg recall include Bakkavor Foods (Trader Joe’s Egg Salad and Potato Salad), Diebergs Kitchen (Diebergs Market products), Reichel Foods (Pro2Snax To The Max), and Great American Deli (Egg Salad Sandwich).

USA Today reports that the hard boiled egg recall affects more than 30 brands. Retailers are reportedly pulling affected products from the shelves.

According to the CDC’s Food Safety Alert, consumers who purchased these products should not consume them. The eggs should be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase. Further, the places where potentially contaminated products were stored should be washed and sanitized.

The CDC also recommends that, for all hard boiled egg products, consumers should check in with the store or restaurant were they were purchased to ensure the product does not contain eggs from the Gainesville Almark Foods processing facility.

“When in doubt, throw it out,” says the CDC statement.

Consumers who purchase hard boiled egg products in the future, including egg salad, potato salad, and deviled eggs, should also ensure that the product does not contain eggs from the Gainesville Almark Food processing facility.

Food service companies are likewise urged by the CDC to refrain from serving products affected by the hard boiled egg recall, throw out such products, and wash and sanitized surfaces where these products may have been prepared or stored.

“Listeria can easily spread to other foods and surfaces,” notes the CDC Food Safety Alert.

Listeriosis, the condition in humans caused by infection by the bacteria, can cause different symptoms, including headache, stiff neck, loss of balance, and aches. The development of listeriosis generally occurs between one and four weeks of exposure, according to the CDC, and is treated with antibiotics.

Additionally, listeriosis is extremely dangerous to pregnant women.

“Pregnant women typically experience only fever and other flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches,” notes the alert. “However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.”

According to USA Today, listeriosis can also disproportionately affect the elderly, very young children, and in those with weakened immune systems.
