- Why: The scales’ batteries pose an ingestion hazard for children.
- Where: The Greater Goods recall is active in the United States.
Greater Goods recalled almost 350,000 sets of kitchen scales over concerns that the batteries pose an ingestion hazard for children.
The recall was published to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website on Jan. 30. It applies to about 349,500 Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales.
According to the recall, the digital kitchen scales violate federal regulations for products containing button cell or coin batteries because the scale has a lithium coin battery that can be easily accessed by children.
The product also comes with a spare coin battery that does not come in child resistant packaging, as is required by the federal Reese’s Law.
“These violations pose an ingestion hazard,” the kitchen scale recall states. “When button cell or coin batteries are swallowed, the ingested batteries can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns, and death.”
No injuries reported so far, kitchen scale recall states
Greater Goods said there have been no injuries reported related to the issue so far. The company is not facing legal action, but Top Class Action follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.
Consumers with the recalled scales are advised to “immediately remove the battery in the digital kitchen scale and place it in an area that children cannot access.”
Affected consumers can contact Greater Goods for information on how to receive a free recall kit, which includes a new replacement battery door that can be secured to the scale.
The affected kitchen scales have model numbers 0480, 0455, 0456, 0458, 0473, 0479, 0481, 0747, 0748, 0749, 0751, 0752 and 0754. They were sold online at Amazon, Walmart and Greater Goods between May 2023 and September 2024 for about $10.
Meanwhile, QVC recently recalled more than one million pairs of oven gloves due to nearly 100 reports of burns caused by the gloves.
