Ford 2021 F-150 Transmission Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2021 F-150 vehicles as the transmission may shift into neutral while driving.
  • Why: An unexpected shift into neutral will cause a loss of drive power and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Ford has issued another recall for its F-150 pickup trucks, this time because of a transmission problem that can cause an unexpected shift into neutral while driving.

Ford Motor Company issued the recall for 47,084 of its 2021 F-150 vehicles on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website March 25.

The recall applies to pickups with 3.5L GTDI, 2.7L and 5.0L engines, 10R80 transmissions and not equipped with Auto Start-Stop technology.

According to the recall, the vehicles’ “transmission fluid pressure low” diagnostic may falsely activate and cause the transmission to shift into a neutral state.

The issue can occur at any speed, and if a false activation occurs, the pickup will coast to a stop as if it is in neutral.

The recall says that the electronic shifter in the vehicles will then attempt to put the pickups into park below speeds of 2 mph/3 kph. Once the vehicle comes to a complete stop, the electronic shifter will automatically shift into park, the notice says.

“A loss of motive power while driving can increase the risk of a crash,” the notice says.

There have been no known instances of crashes so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Ford F-150 Drivers Can Get a Free Fix

The problem was caused by transmission software that was inadvertently activated for certain vehicles without Auto Start-Stop technology, the recall report states.

Customers might be notified of the issue by a wrench light that will turn on.

According to the recall, dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 2, 2022.

The news comes less than a month after Ford Motor Company announced it is recalling 157,306 of its 2021 F-150 pickup trucks due to issues with the windshield wipers.

Ford is facing a separate class action lawsuit alleging 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-liter Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, Canada.

  1. DAVE says:

My 2018 has shifted into neutral going up a steep hill at less than 20 mph and my truck has autostart. Has anyone else had a/c compressor failure. Mine failed at 90000 km and the stupid woman at the dealer said it was because of the heat wave we had for two weeks in early june.

I have a ford f150 2018 5.0L v8 coyote and I’m having rattling in the engine and low oil pressure and it’s burning through oil. I was just told I’d likely need a whole new engine! I have a warranty I purchased in august when I bought the truck and I’m hopeful they will allow replacement before they finally settle this. I wouldn’t mind being a part of this!

  4. Irene says:

My 2010 Ford 150 stopped on the freeway and a wrench appeared on the dashboard. I was in the slow lane and the truck began to lose power. I quickly moved to the shoulder of the freeway and the truck stopped. My truck was towed to a Ford dealer and I was told I needed a new transmission. I did have a new transmission installed elsewhere as Ford’s was too expensive. The truck gave no indication of a transmission problem, such as slippage, it just stopped. I could have had a serious accident if I was in the fast lane when this occurred.

  5. Cindy says:

We bought a pick up new in 2018 been back to the dealership several times with transmission issues. Not shifting gears while driving, going to neutral while driving, putting it in park and it lunges forward like you are on the gas when you aren’t. Even caused a collision at one point. Took it straight to ford and reported it. They say they hooked it to the computer and it doesn’t show anything or well it’s not doing it now. Issue still isnt resolved. Also had oil consumption issues, all they said was bring by everyday and we will check it for you, implying I cant read a dipstick, and I read the dipstick that’s why I took it to them! Last time there they said just trade it in. That’s not the point, I want it fixed!
