  • Where: The egg recall has been linked to illnesses in California, Utah, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Virginia.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a recent egg recall it says is linked to a salmonella outbreak.

Wisconsin-based Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC initiated the recall Sept. 6 over concerns the eggs could be contaminated with salmonella. They are linked to 65 illnesses with 24 hospitalizations across nine states.

“Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data show that eggs supplied by Milo’s Poultry Farms are contaminated with salmonella and are making people sick,” the CDC says in a Sept. 6 post regarding the investigation.

Milo’s distributed the recalled eggs to Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan through retail stores and foodservice distributors, according to the recall notice.

The recall covers all expiration dates of any carton sizes and egg types labeled “Milo’s Poultry Farms” or “Tony’s Fresh Market” and all cases of eggs for foodservice retail distribution.

Number of sick likely much higher than reported, CDC says

The egg recall has been linked to illnesses in California, Utah, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Virginia, according to the CDC, which also says the true number of individuals sickened by the eggs is likely much higher than the number reported and may not indeed be limited to states with the known illnesses.

The recall notice warns consumers to throw away or return the recalled eggs to their original place of purchase and wash any items or surfaces that may have come in contact with them.

In other egg-related news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Eggland’s Best earlier this year over claims the company falsely advertises that its eggs have less saturated fat than regular eggs.
