two kids fashion dolls regarding its recall due to a chemical hazardHealth Canada has issued a recall notice for a children’s fashion doll over concerns that the product contains a high level of phthalates, posing a chemical hazard.

According to the recall notice, the products are called the Ethnic Fashion Doll or the Lovey Gal Fashion Doll. The dolls are 5 inches tall, wearing dresses and pink shoes. The affected dolls come strapped to cardboard packaging with SKU 243675, UPC 639277435125 and tracking number 243675-11649-001-051719.

Health Canada notes that the products exceed the allowable level of a hazardous chemical and instructs owners to take them away from children immediately.

The chemical at issue, according to the agency, are phthalates. Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to increase flexibility in plastic materials, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The chemicals are also used as solvents in products such as vinyl flooring, detergents, lubricating oils, adhesives, and raincoats. They can be found in other plastic products like storage boxes, toys, and medical tubing. Personal hygiene products are also known to contain phthalates, including shampoo, nail polish and hairspray.

Phthalates are ubiquitous in modern society. According to the CDC, people inhale and ingest the chemical though exposure to phthalate containing materials, such as food and drink containers. The effect of this “low level” exposure is unknown, according to the agency, and more research is necessary.

Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or other incidents related to the recalled children’s fashion doll as of Jan. 27, 2020, according to Health Canada.

5,520 dolls were sold in Canada, according to the recall notice, between September of 2019 and December of 2019 at Dollar Store retail locations. The children’s fashion dolls were made in China and distributed by DTSC Imports, located in Burnaby, BC.

Health Canada instructs consumers to return the recalled children’s fashion dolls to a Dollar tree location for a refund.

Consumers who have experienced a health or safety incident from the recalled children’s fashion dolls or any other product are encouraged by Health Canada to complete a Consumer Product Incident Report Form, available on the agency’s website.

Recalls of Dolls and Other Children’s Products in Canada

The recall of the children’s fashion doll is not the first recall issued by Health Canada affecting children’s toys this year. Recently, a Winnie the Pooh plush toy was recalled by the agency over a reported choking hazard. According to the notice, the hard plastic nose on the doll could detach during play.

Other products that have been recalled include children’s pajamas, for failing to meet anti-flammability standards, strollers, bassinets, and other toys.

Recent recall alerts for children’s products and others can be found on Health Canada’s website.
